What is Daylight?
- Product category
- A desktop video-background studio and virtual-camera utility for Windows and macOS.
- Scene format
- Thirty complete authored images per adaptive scene: six daylight phases across clear, cloudy, rain, snow and fog. The app blends those images rather than simulating a continuous 3D world.
- Webcam processing
- Person segmentation and final frame composition run on your computer. Daylight does not upload webcam video for cloud processing and does not handle meeting audio.
- Camera output
- Select Daylight’s software camera in a meeting app that accepts it. Keep Daylight running to supply frames.
- Accounts
- An account is optional for the core local camera workflow and downloaded scene packs. Optional cloud background creation uses an account and credits in supported Windows releases.
- Time and weather
- Follow local time, optionally enable live weather, or choose conditions manually. Live weather uses Open-Meteo; device location is optional.
Use the utility comparison to decide whether built-in meeting effects, OBS or Daylight suit your needs.
What are the supported systems and platform differences?
| Platform | Requirement and release status | Camera name and updates |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | Windows 11 or later, 64-bit. The current public installer is an unsigned development preview; setup requires administrator approval and Windows may display a security notice. | Daylight (Windows Virtual Camera). Verified in-app Windows updates are available. |
| macOS | macOS 13 or later, Apple Silicon or Intel. The universal DMG is signed and notarized; camera activation can require one-time system approval. | Daylight Virtual Camera. Mac updates use a verified website DMG installed manually. |
The current downloads are Windows 0.7.15 and macOS 0.7.0 at this review. The live release manifest and download page are the source for current versions and checksums; this dated reference may lag a later release.
The platforms do not have identical feature sets. Newer Windows releases add Saved Spaces, Background only output, account-owned AI creation and other controls. This page does not promise those features in the current Mac DMG. There is no Daylight mobile release, and the built-in Windows virtual camera does not support Windows 10.
What has actually been verified?
The documented macOS 0.7.0 release checks include Apple signing and notarization, universal binary slices, moving output in QuickTime and a private Teams meeting on Apple Silicon, and a 30 fps local pipeline during the Teams check. They do not establish physical Intel-Mac operation, a universal 60 fps meeting result, or a Daylight field test in Zoom or Google Meet.
These are Daylight-reported checks from its September 20, 2026 Mac release record. They are not new camera tests from this website review. Client versions, organizational policy and hardware can affect compatibility, so test your exact receiving client before relying on it.
The setup guide explains documented camera-selection patterns. The troubleshooting guide helps distinguish capture, processing, local delivery and meeting-network problems.
Who writes these guides, and how are they checked?
Daylight publishes these guides and also makes the Daylight app. Comparisons are product-publisher guidance, with that relationship disclosed. We do not present them as independent reviews or add invented ratings, endorsements or benchmarks.
- Sources: use official vendor documentation for third-party controls and requirements, and Daylight’s release and privacy records for product claims.
- Scope: label general advice, documented support and observed release verification separately. Never imply a client or processor architecture was field-tested merely because a binary or help page exists.
- Review dates: show when substantive claims were checked. A review date does not mean every supported device was tested that day.
- Corrections: update claims when a provider changes its controls or Daylight changes its supported platforms. Explain limitations beside the relevant claim.
These pages link to public release metadata and vendor sources where available. Daylight’s reported release checks are identified as such, and should not be read as independent certification of meeting-client compatibility.
