CHOOSING A UTILITY

Which video background
utility do you need?

Use your meeting app’s built-in effects for a simple blur or image. Use a virtual-camera utility when you need a separate scene workflow that your meeting app can receive as a camera.

Which option fits your call?

  • Hide a room in one meeting app: start with its built-in blur or image replacement. Check your account, administrator settings and device requirements first.
  • Combine layouts, graphics or multiple video sources: consider OBS Studio and its virtual camera. Scene composition and person removal are separate tasks.
  • Use scenes that follow time and optional weather: consider Daylight on Windows 11 or macOS 13+. It removes the foreground background locally and sends the composed frame through its own virtual camera.
  • Need a phone, tablet or Windows 10 solution: check your meeting app’s supported built-in effects. Daylight’s current built-in Windows virtual camera requires Windows 11; there is no Daylight mobile release.

Built-in effects, OBS or Daylight?

Choose a workflow by what you need to send to your call
OptionGood fitWhat to check
Zoom, Teams or Meet effectsA quick blur or replacement image inside the app you already use.Feature availability depends on the app, device and account or administrator settings. Effect choices do not configure a separate utility.
OBS Studio virtual cameraA composed OBS scene containing selected sources, layouts or graphics. The receiving app must accept the OBS camera. Its virtual camera exports the scene; it does not by itself remove your real background.
Daylight virtual cameraAuthored room and outdoor scenes with six daylight phases and five weather conditions, plus local person segmentation.Windows 11 or macOS 13+, a supported system-camera selector, and one-time camera installation or activation. Keep Daylight running during the call.

Zoom documents image and video backgrounds, Teams documents blur and custom images, and Meet documents backgrounds and visual effects. Their exact feature sets differ. Check the official guides below for your device.

For Daylight’s platform differences, optional accounts and installation status, use the product reference. We do not publish a universal “best” ranking or claim measured performance superiority over these tools.

What is the difference between a background and a virtual camera?

Background blur
Softens what is behind you while retaining the real scene. It can still reveal outlines and is not a security boundary.
Virtual background
Replaces the visible area behind the person. Software segmentation or a chroma key decides which pixels belong to the person.
Virtual camera
Exposes a software-generated video frame as a camera device. The meeting app selects that device instead of the physical webcam.
AI-generated background
An image or scene created from a prompt. Generating that asset is separate from removing the person’s background during a call.
Daylight living background
A scene with 30 authored images: six parts of the day across clear, cloudy, rain, snow and fog. Daylight blends conditions; it is not a looping video or continuous 3D simulation.

A still background image does not eliminate person-segmentation work. A virtual camera does not automatically imply cloud processing, background removal or microphone support. Inspect each utility’s actual data flows and features.

What should you check before installing?

  1. Operating system and receiving app. Confirm both the utility’s minimum OS and whether your exact meeting client accepts its camera. Managed desktops can restrict installation.
  2. Setup effort. Built-in effects avoid an extra camera installation. Separate utilities can need administrator or system-extension approval.
  3. Room lighting and motion. Test hair, glasses and hands in the receiving app’s preview. A quiet scene and even lighting help you assess the result.
  4. Processing and privacy. Separate webcam processing, meeting transmission, optional weather requests and optional cloud asset generation. Read the privacy checklist.
  5. Accounts and charges. Check the chosen feature’s current terms. Daylight’s core local camera workflow is available without an account; optional cloud background creation uses an account and credits.

Next: choose a natural-looking scene, set up Daylight’s camera, or diagnose a camera problem.
